Article #2: Do You Need Internet for a Barn Camera System?
The answer is yes and no. If you want to watch your barn cameras remotely on a phone, tablet or computer, the system needs an internet connection somewhere. If you are happy watching on a television at the farm, Riverwind can build a system that operates with no outside internet at all.
Why This Question Matters on Farms
Many farms still have internet only at the house, weak service, or no dependable service at all. That does not mean the barn cannot have commercial cameras. Riverwind began selling wireless barn camera systems in 1997, when the technology was very different, so designing around limited rural connectivity has always been part of the job.
Before Apps and Modern IP Cameras
When Riverwind started in 1997, the systems customers recognize today did not exist. Our early wireless barn cameras sent video by radio to a receiver, and that receiver displayed the picture on a television. By today's standards the image quality was far from impressive, but for a producer who could check a barn from the house, it was still a lifesaver. The technology has changed dramatically; the problem we solve - getting a useful picture from the barn to the producer - has not.
No Internet: The Standalone System
Riverwind's Standalone system is pre-programmed to operate on its own private local network. The cameras, antennas and control equipment communicate with each other and display directly on a television. No outside internet connection is required for that local viewing.
The tradeoff is simple: without internet, you cannot view the cameras remotely on phones, tablets or computers. Television-only viewing works; remote viewing does not.
What If Internet Comes Later?
A Standalone system does not have to be a dead end. If reliable internet becomes available later, the way the equipment is connected can be reconfigured and the appropriate app added, essentially turning the system into a Hybrid-style setup with remote viewing.
More Than One Building
The Standalone system shown on our website is normally presented as a one-barn installation, but it can be adapted to multiple buildings when the farm layout requires it.
One Standalone Limitation: PTZ Cameras
Riverwind does not normally sell pan-tilt-zoom cameras on a completely internet-free Standalone installation. PTZ cameras are very dependable, but on rare occasions their pan/tilt/zoom mechanism may need a simple recalibration. In our experience, perhaps roughly one out of 100 PTZ installations over a five-year period needs that simple reset. On an internet-connected system we can assist remotely. On a fully isolated system we cannot, so we prefer our proven fixed cameras for that application.
Internet at the House Is Often Enough
If you have good internet at the house but none at the barn, a commercial wireless bridge can carry the network between the two locations. You do not have to buy a second internet subscription for the barn just to operate the cameras.
If you want regular Wi-Fi in the barn as well, an ordinary router can be added to the Riverwind network equipment. You may purchase that router yourself, and we will help you connect it.
Internet Is a Tool - Not the Camera System
The cameras capture the video. The local network moves that video around the farm. The internet connection is what lets that video leave the local network so you can see it remotely. Once those jobs are separated, the options become much clearer: excellent internet, internet only at the house, unreliable internet, or no internet at all can each be handled differently.
The Simple Answer
Phones, tablets or remote computers: yes, internet is required. A dedicated local television: no, internet is not required.
Internet changes what you can do with a barn camera system. It does not determine whether you can have one.
