The Cameras
Copying the success of our High Def Wireless System, we sell this system standard with 1080p 2.8mm cameras with IR and Starlight vision. This means each camera will cover approximately 103°. When placed in the corner it will see wider than the walls and you'll catch everything. When viewing large areas, try breaking it up into 50 to 75 feet squares and placing a camera in each (you'll have a little overlap). The smaller the area, the greater the definition. Most of the customer photos on this website were captured with these camera specs. We also offer a cheaper version of this same camera if you'd prefer to go that route- it is the same specs without the starlight lens. It still has a 100 feet IR rating and same 103° field of view. Where the starlight camera has an aluminum housing, this one is plastic cased. Both are weatherproof.
Camera Count
When selecting a system, it's just as important to think about how many cameras you might end up with. A 1 to 3 camera system will be full at 3 cameras. A 4 to 7 camera system will be full at 7 cameras. We can provide systems that will fit up to 15 cameras, but you'll have to call. In the pricing tool, you'll see the option to upgrade the base unit at the house and barn. This will allow you to grow up to 7 cameras even if you start with just 1 to 3. You can add cameras later, just be sure you start with enough slots.
Recording
Adding a hard drive will allow the system to record. You can review data using your TV and the included mouse. The hard drive space will begin to overwrite the oldest video first when full and continue to operate. A 1TB hard drive will give you approx. 20 days of recording for one camera or 10 days for 2 cameras and so on (medium setting, 15 frames/second). If you elect live view only, you can easily add a hard-drive later.
The Cables
Unlike our high definition system where we send the cables, this system operates on cables you buy locally. Ethernet cable (Cat-5e or Cat-6) is available at most hardware and retail stores. You provide an Ethernet cable from each camera in the barn to the control unit. There will be another piece running from the control unit to the antenna outside of the barn. At the house, you will need one cable from the home base unit to the antenna. If your home is close to the barn and not brick or metal, you may be able to place the home antenna inside, but plan on the outside. Nobody gets mad because it's easier to install than they anticipated.
The Antennas
When we designed this system, we stayed with the long range 3 mile antennas used in our HD system. We found that even close setups benefit from these compared to lesser models that cost just as much. The antennas will go through limbs and wood, but don't do so well with masonry and metal. The antennas are meant to be placed outside. the antennas include a
flat mount with a pole loop. It can be used either way, but the antennas must face each other. We carry an
optional pole / bracket
to be used with the flat mount and loop. This allows for easier positioning on walls that are not parallel with each other. so even if your barn or house are made of metal, there should be no issue. See the slide show above for an example.
Viewing on the TV
The home base unit connects via HDMI cable to your TV. Use the TV's remote to go to the barn channel. The system will also accept a computer monitor (not a laptop) if you have a spare you wish to use. You can view a single full screen camera all the time, or select a grid that will display all cameras at once. You can also setup a full screen rotation that cycles through the cameras. You have the ability to digitally zoom in on the cameras to get a closer look at what is going on.
Adding Internet Accessibility to your Stand-Alone System
Riverwind is currently marketing this Stand-Alone system to customers without internet. It is a great alternative to our discontinued traditional system- it still displays on your TV but now it displays in high definition, can record, and has much better infrared. If down the road you get Internet, this can be converted to also display on your phones and computers at no charge.
